“Be a militant for love, an extremist for tenderness, a radical for gentleness, because if you love people, you will loathe when they are being treated unjustly.” —Brother West All levels of injustice burn my stomach, as I try to “do the most good and the least harm,” and I extend this to animals and the environment, too.Because I do not want to give one dollar to sweat shops, I strive to buy clothes and shoes only from second-hand stores. Because I do not want to give one dollar to factory farms’ exploitation of people, the environment, and animals, I’ve been a happy vegan for six years.  But sometimes I do support injustice. I’m not kidding myself—I know buying bananas in the US is problematic—but people love to point to the places where my ethics do not seem to square. “Oh, what about plant suffering?” Please. “What about starving children?” Yes, that’s a grave problem that I grieve and, believe it or not, I can work on multiple problems simultaneously.  I will never throw my hands up in defeat. Because I cannot live fully free of cruelty does not mean that I will not work to eradicate it as much as possible, striving to live in love. Love is radical and extreme.
